THE LOST MELODY

the lost melody (2020)

This was the project assigned to my class right after Untitled Quarantine Film. I can't remember the prompt in great detail, but I'm pretty sure the main objective was to tell a story without using any dialogue.

The Lost Melody is about a young musician who is struggling with writer's block while the deadline for his next project is steadily approaching. After an unexpected event, he finds himself periodically unable to write a single chord.

I made this short project on the fifth month of what was supposed to be a "two week lockdown." I was attending Rutgers ZOOM University, and my motivation to create/write/edit/shoot anything was rapidly declining. (I would eventually take a break from college and then transfer to a different one entirely.) For this class, we had to turn in scripts, production books, shot lists—none of which I was able to do. I was very blessed to have such a sympathetic professor. He just told me to make what I could, and to turn it in when I was ready.

I didn't really write a script for this film at all. I woke up on one inclement day, and I just started recording these (painfully) dramatic shots of myself staring out the window. Along the way, I jumbled together random notes (literally on the notes app) that would serve as the outline.

Man, what a mess!
